Modern Warfare 2 - Part 2 (Multiplayer)

So after completing Modern Warfare’s single player on Hardened and Veteran, I decided that it was too good to put down and wondered into it’s multiplayer offerings…
After a considerable amout of time was spent and thumbs were rebloodied, I decided that MW2’s multiplayer is big enough and definately good enough to deserve it’s own review!

Straight off the bat, the best part about MW2’s multiplayer is that it works perfectly online and off. There are no corners cut or versions dumbed down, so if you do your multiplayer offline you still have access to the awesome unlocks and upgrades!
Offline multiplayer has the standard 1-4 splitscreen (more if you system link) thing happening and online has (if I’m not mistaken) the 4-18 chaos that you love!

The first of the two multiplayer options is called SpecOps.
[Yes I know it isn’t strictly a multiplayer mode, but like ODST’s ‘FireFight’ it is just better with other people!]
In essance SpecOps is all the awesome moments from COD4 and MW2 with a sprinkling of it’s own magic!
Moments like sneaking through Chenobyl in your sniper gear, providing heavy fire support from a gunship, using a blizzard to mask your sabbotage of an airfield…and TONS more!
All these missions come with a ranking system and according to your chosen difficulty setting and mission performance you are awarded stars.
Stars unlock more missions as well as getting you achievements…if that’s your thing. The experiance, like the single player, is chaotic and cinematic but the best part of it all is that these bit sized bits of adreneline are all playable via 2-man co-op, be it splitscreen, online or system link!

The second multiplayer mode is your traditional multiplayer.
Atleast traditional multiplayer with an awesome unlock and customization element!
Did I already say it was awesome? Because it really is awesome!
Basically as you fight your way through the expected multiplayer modes [kill everyone, help your friends kill the other guys, kill the guys trying to steal you flag/capture your thing you don’t want captured] you are awarded with wicked extras!
These extras range from new weapons to killstreak and perks.
Depending on which weapons you use and how well you use them you can unlock equipment for them like new sights or heartbeat sensors etc.
There are also killstreak and deathstreak abilities to be unlocked. These are basically little abilities that are designed to assist you whether you’re doing well or doing badly.
Killstreaks range from supply drops, to airstrikes and UAV support, where as deathstreaks allow you to do stuff like increase your starting health or stealing your attackers gear.
Through in some perks like quicker reloads and longer melee range and the whole affair starts feeling alot like an MMO!
What’s great about this is that it allows you to create your own soldier and adapt his skills and equipment to each map and each enemy, adding a whole new element to things!

What I was surprised by was that unlike COD4 the experiance wasn’t as unforgiving! This could either be because of the new unlock system evening the playing field or because the hardcores haven’t become entrenched yet!
Still it’s fun and I’m not complaining either way!

When it comes down to it Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer is truly epic and is alone worth the purchase of MW2!
If you don’t have MW2 yet you should be planning on getting it as soon as possible!
